Leading the evolution of IP audio & video codecs since 1995

YLE at the World Athletics Championships

October 1, 2025

Finnish public broadcaster YLE relied on Prodys technology for its coverage of the recent World Athletics Championships at Japan’s National Stadium. To support live commentary, YLE deployed the Quantum2 W commentary unit, which handled audio and video feeds for three commentators while simultaneously receiving a programme return video signal.

On the receiving side, the setup was completed with an Ikusnet3 HR unit by Prodys, ensuring seamless integration of audio and video streams between Tokyo and Finland.

For maximum reliability, the YLE technical team connected the Quantum2 W using both ethernet ports: one linked to a dedicated 20 Mbps line with guaranteed bandwidth, and the other to a shared LAN. In addition, a local SIM card was inserted to provide an extra backup layer. The video streams were configured at a constant bitrate (CBR) of 4 Mbps, delivering sufficient picture quality for commentary without complaints from production teams. To further reinforce stability, a backup Quantum2 W unit was also running at YLE’s offices.

This careful configuration demonstrated the flexibility of the Quantum2 W, combining multiple network interfaces—dedicated line, shared LAN, and LTE SIM—to ensure stable and resilient transmission. Thanks to this redundancy, YLE was able to maintain reliable connections and deliver high-quality audio and video throughout the event.

The successful deployment of the Quantum2 W in this demanding live production environment underscores the unit’s suitability for large-scale international events, offering broadcasters a dependable tool for commentary and contribution workflows.
